Pedigree DentaStix: Which Size for Which Dog?

Pick DentaStix by your dog's weight, not by breed or how big the dog looks. The medium listings are labelled for dogs of 10 to 25kg, and the large listing is for dogs of 25kg and over. Beyond that rule there are three things worth knowing: where borderline dogs fall, how the Fresh version differs from the standard sticks, and how to make sure a chew is the right size to eat safely.
The three versions side by side
| Medium Daily | Medium Fresh | Large | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listed weight band | 10 to 25kg | 10 to 25kg | 25kg and over |
| Pack as listed | 105 sticks | 4 x 28 sticks (112) | 4 x 28 sticks |
| Listed weight of pack | 2.92kg | 2.88kg | 4.32kg |
| Distinctive listing detail | Light brown stick with chicken liver, dark brown with beef liver | Green tea extract and eucalyptus oil, X-shaped | Ingredients list 2.4% sodium tripolyphosphate |
| Ratings shown | 4.8 from 1,514 | 4.8 from 4,414 | 4.8 from 7,588 |
All three come from the Amazon.co.uk listings at the time of writing. The products are DentaStix Daily for medium dogs, DentaStix Fresh for medium dogs and DentaStix for large dogs. Check the pack you actually receive, since listings change.
Dogs on the borderline
The bands overlap at exactly 25kg: the medium listings say "10-25kg" and the large listing says "25kg+". A dog at 24 or 26kg is therefore a judgement call, and the listings don't settle it. A sensible approach is to weigh your dog at a vet's scales or a pet shop, use the healthy weight rather than the current one if your dog is carrying extra, and ask the vet if you are still unsure. Many owners pick the size that suits the dog's mouth: a chew that is comfortably held and chewed rather than swallowed.
Dogs under 10kg are outside what these three listings cover. The large-dog listing says the range comes in sizes for small, medium and large dogs, but it doesn't give the small band, so read the pack. Puppies need extra care, because the listings disagree: the medium Daily listing says all life stages, while the large and Fresh listings say adult. If you have a puppy or a dog with loose teeth, ask your vet before offering any hard chew.
Daily or Fresh?
The Fresh version is the same weight band with a different formula. The listing says it has decaffeinated green tea extract and eucalyptus oil, and that these help freshen breath. It also describes an X-shaped design said to help break down plaque and tartar, and a claim of reducing plaque and tartar build-up "by up to 80 percent". The standard sticks claim a tartar reduction of up to 80% when fed daily. Those figures sit in different listings with different wording, so it's not safe to read one as better than the other.
The ingredient lists differ too. Fresh lists cereal, starch, humectant, cereal protein, vegetable gum, minerals, sodium tri-polyphosphate, meat and meat by-products derived from poultry and pork, cellulose fibre, flavours, preservatives, zinc sulphate and vegetable oil. The Daily medium list is cereals, vegetable derivatives, minerals, meat and animal derivatives (with chicken and beef liver) and oils and fats. In practice: if your dog avoids pork, check Fresh closely, and if your dog avoids beef, the Daily medium includes it. Fresh also lists generic "flavours" and "preservatives" even though the listing says no artificial colours or flavours, so if that matters to you, read the pack. The listings differ on small details such as one Fresh spec field that lists large breeds too; go by the title and weight band.
Safety, whichever size you choose
- Supervise at first. Watch how your dog eats it for the first few chews. If it is gulped whole, ask whether a different size or a different product suits better.
- Take away the last piece. A small remaining end is easier to swallow whole.
- Keep water available. The large listing's directions say to provide fresh water.
- Count the calories. Chews count towards daily intake. The listings don't give calories per stick, so check the pack and trim meals if needed.
- Stop and call a vet if your dog coughs, gags persistently, retches or seems distressed after eating one.

Mistakes worth avoiding
Buying the large pack for a 12kg dog because it seems better value is the most common one: the chew is sized for a bigger mouth and heavier chewer. Splitting a large stick to make it fit is not the same as feeding a correctly sized one. And no chew replaces brushing; our dog dental health guide explains why mouth care is a routine and not a product. For a review of the standard medium pack, see our DentaStix Daily review.
In short: match the band to your dog's weight, treat 25kg as the line where you should check the pack and probably ask your vet, and choose Fresh over Daily only if you prefer its ingredients.
