YuMOVE Senior Dog High Strength: Review

A box of 120 tablets, labelled for dogs aged 8 and over, with an ingredient story built around fish oil and a glucosamine variant. That is YuMOVE Senior Dog Joint Supplement (High Strength) in one sentence. It is aimed squarely at older dogs, and the listing is thinner on detail than the one for the Essential tablets, which shapes how confident you can be about what you are buying.

What the listing says is in it

The product page describes a "triple action" formula for senior dogs over 8 years. The named ingredients are ActivEase GLM, added fish oil, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine and hyaluronic acid. Another YuMOVE listing expands GLM to glucosamine, chondroitin and green lipped mussel, so the same complex is probably what is meant here, but this listing does not spell it out.

The maker's claims, as the listing words them, are that the product aids mobility, reinforces joint structure and soothes joints with omega-3, and that hyaluronic acid helps lubricate and cushion the joint. These are manufacturer descriptions. The listing does not cite studies, and we have not independently checked any of it.

The distinctive point against the Essential tablets is the added fish oil, which the listing credits with extra joint-soothing omega-3s. It also names N-acetyl-D-glucosamine as helping to maintain healthy joint structure, which the Essential listing does not mention.

What the listing leaves out

This is the weak spot. The version of the listing we worked from has no per-tablet amounts, no composition panel, no daily directions and no flavour or format detail beyond the word "tablets". Packaging is described as eco-friendly and letter box ready. The count is 120.

That means you cannot work out from the page how many tablets a dog of your dog's size takes each day, and so you cannot work out how long a pack lasts. The method, once you have the pack directions, is to divide 120 by the daily tablet count, then divide the pack price by the resulting number of days to get a cost per day. Check the current price on Amazon before you do the sum. Until you have the directions, treat any cost comparison with the Essential pack as incomplete, because that one holds 300 and the two are not like for like.

A smaller pool of ratings

The listing shows 4.8 out of 5 from 355 ratings at the time of writing. That is a strong score, but the sample is small next to the 18,418 ratings on the Essential tablets, so it carries less weight. A high average from a few hundred people is encouraging; it is not proof.

Things to be careful about

Allergies. Fish oil is listed and the GLM complex is probably mussel-based. If your dog has a known fish or shellfish sensitivity, talk to your vet before trying it.

Unknown tablet characteristics. The listing does not say what the tablets taste like or how big they are. A dog that is already fussy about tablets may be harder to dose than one that takes a chew, and a fussy older dog may be a poor match.

A supplement is not a diagnosis. Stiffness in an older dog has more than one possible cause, and a joint supplement says nothing about which. If your dog is limping, struggling on stairs, slow to rise or flinching when touched, see your vet. We list the typical signs in our arthritis signs guide, and the non-supplement changes that often help in helping a stiff senior dog at home.

No review period stated. The listing does not tell you how long to give it before judging. Agree a review point with your vet and stick to it, rather than carrying on indefinitely.

Where it sits in the range

There are three YuMOVE joint tablets we cover: Essential, this Senior one and a Max Strength version. The differences, and a way to choose between them, are in our three-way comparison. If you are weighing it against other brands for an older dog, our senior joint supplement roundup is the better starting point.

Who it suits

For a dog aged 8 or over with a vet who is comfortable with a joint supplement, and no fish or shellfish sensitivities, the Senior tablets are a reasonable thing to try, with a high rating behind them. Do check the directions on the pack, because the listing does not supply them, and decide your review date before you start. If your dog is under 8, dislikes tablets or has a known seafood allergy, look at other options first.
