YuMOVE vs Zesty Paws: Tablets or Soft Chews for Stiff Dogs?

Before you compare ingredients, decide if your dog will take a tablet at all. That one question separates YuMOVE Joint Supplement for Dogs (Essential) from Zesty Paws Hip & Joint Chews, and for many households it settles the matter before the ingredient lists are even opened. The two products share a goal, supporting the joints of a dog showing signs of stiffness, but they get there in different formats, from different recipes, with different drawbacks.

Ease of giving

This is where the two diverge most. Zesty Paws markets its chew on the basis that dogs enjoy the flavour and it can be fed without hiding it in food. That is the maker's claim, and your own dog may disagree, but a soft turkey chew is generally easier to get into a reluctant dog than a tablet. The YuMOVE tablets are listed as seafood flavoured, which may or may not appeal. Many owners push a tablet into a bit of food, which works with some dogs and fails with the cunning ones.

For a big dog the picture changes. A giant dog on four YuMOVE tablets or a dog over 30kg on three Zesty Paws chews is handling a lot of units a day, and with the chew you are also feeding extra calories. The pack counts matter too: 300 tablets lasts a medium dog 150 days at two a day, while 90 chews lasts a 20kg dog 45 days at two a day. For cost per day, divide the pack price by days per pack and check the current price on Amazon for both. Pack price alone tells you very little.

Ingredients: not directly comparable

The two listings give quantities in different ways. YuMOVE states 250mg of glucosamine HCl and 150mg of green lipped mussel powder per tablet, plus 1.5mg of hyaluronic acid. Zesty Paws states glucosamine at 9% of the chew, green lipped mussel at 4.5%, eggshell membrane at 4.5% and chondroitin at 3%. Without the weight of a single chew, you cannot turn one set of figures into the other, and we would be wary of anyone who claims to rank them on the listing data alone.

What you can compare is the makeup. YuMOVE relies on mussel for its chondroitin and adds hyaluronic acid. Zesty Paws lists chondroitin separately and adds eggshell membrane. Both include green lipped mussel and glucosamine. Both talk about vitamin C and E, and both make marketing claims we could not verify. The Zesty listing says "clinically proven" and "recommended by 9 out of 10 vets" with no cited source. YuMOVE calls itself the UK's number one veterinary joint supplement brand, which is also a claim.

Drawbacks you should weigh

YuMOVE Essential - Shellfish is listed as an allergen, and fish and pork liver are in the composition. - The age range contradicts itself within the listing. - It is a tablet, which some dogs will refuse. - No trial length is given, so you will need to agree one with your vet.

Zesty Paws Hip & Joint - The base is turkey meal, pea flakes and potato flakes, which will not suit every dog. - It is a calorie-bearing chew, with no per-chew weight given. - The pack lasts only a month for a dog over 30kg. - The marketing claims are strong and unsupported on the page.

Common ground

Neither listing is a substitute for a vet's opinion. If your dog is limping, slow to get up or avoiding stairs, book an appointment first, and read our honest look at whether joint supplements work to set your expectations. Both products, at best, offer support. Our individual reviews, YuMOVE Essential and Zesty Paws Hip & Joint, go into more detail, and our wider roundup covers other options.

Making the call

Choose YuMOVE Essential if your dog will take tablets, you want mg-per-tablet amounts on the page, you prefer a large pack, and your dog is an adult with no shellfish, fish or pork sensitivity. Confirm the age guidance on the pack.

Choose Zesty Paws if your dog refuses tablets, has no turkey, pea or potato issue, and you are happy to count the chews as part of its daily food. It suits small and medium dogs best, because the pack goes much further for them. It also gives you a stated four-week trial to work to.

Choose neither without a vet conversation if your dog has existing health conditions, is on other medication, or is a puppy under four months.
