Best Joint Supplements for Dogs in the UK

Three listings, two formats, one shared limit: none of these products replaces a vet. The picks below come from what the Amazon.co.uk listings actually state, namely the age band each product targets, whether it is a tablet or a chew, what the ingredient panel shows, the pack size, and any allergen or oddity worth knowing before you order. Every statement about what a product does is the maker's claim. This desk has not tested any of them.
If your dog is limping, struggling on stairs or has stopped doing something they used to do, book the vet first and shop second. Our guide to the signs of arthritis in dogs explains what to look for. Joint supplements are support alongside veterinary advice, not treatment, and the evidence for them is mixed, which we go through in do dog joint supplements actually work.
YuMOVE Essential, the tablet for adult dogs
YuMOVE Joint Supplement for Dogs (Essential) is aimed at stiff adult dogs before the senior years. The listing is inconsistent about the age band: the product title says 6 to 8 years, while one of the bullet points says 5 to 8. That is a small point, but check the pack rather than trusting either.
The listed ingredients are the main draw. Each tablet is stated to provide 250mg glucosamine HCl, 150mg green lipped mussel powder (described as containing natural chondroitin), 1.5mg hyaluronic acid and small amounts of vitamins C and E and manganese. The listing also describes omega-3 from the mussel. The pack holds 300 tablets, and the feeding table rises with dog size from one tablet a day for small dogs to four for giant breeds, so a big dog works through the pack much faster than a small one. When comparing products, work out cost per day by dividing the pack price by the number of days it lasts for your dog's size.
The drawbacks are real. The allergen line says shellfish, the flavour is listed as seafood, and the composition includes pork liver powder and fish powder, so it is a poor fit for dogs with known shellfish, pork or fish sensitivities. Tablets also mean a daily routine of getting several into a large dog. Amazon.co.uk shows 4.6 out of 5 from 18,418 ratings at the time of writing, and the listing calls it the UK's number one joint supplement veterinary brand, which is the brand's own statement.
YuMOVE Senior, the older-dog step up
YuMOVE Senior Dog Joint Supplement (High Strength) is the same brand's product for dogs aged 8 and over. The listing describes the same glucosamine, chondroitin and green lipped mussel approach as the Essential tablet, with added fish oil for omega-3 and the hyaluronic acid claim carried over. The pack is 120 tablets in letterbox-friendly packaging, which suits people who are out when the postman calls.
Be aware of what the listing does not give. The text we have for this product shows no ingredient quantities and no feeding table, so you cannot compare strength with the other two on paper. The pack is also smaller than the Essential one. The rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 355 ratings, a far smaller sample than the other two, so treat that high score with some caution. If you are comparing the full range, the YuMOVE Essential, Senior and Max Strength comparison goes into the differences.
Zesty Paws Hip & Joint Chews, the soft-chew option
Zesty Paws Hip & Joint Chews suit dogs that refuse tablets, since these are turkey-flavoured chews. The listed composition has turkey meal at 16%, glucosamine at 9%, green lipped mussel at 4.5%, eggshell membrane at 4.5% and chondroitin at 3%, with vitamins C and E added. The listing says they are suitable for dogs from 4 months old, with a daily amount of one, two or three chews depending on whether the dog is under 15kg, 15 to 30kg or over 30kg. It advises feeding daily for at least four weeks. The pack is 90 chews.
Several cautions apply. A chew is a food, and the listing gives 284 kcal per 100g, so for a dog on a weight plan it is worth counting. The base is pea and potato flakes, which will not suit every dog. The bullet points use phrases such as clinically proven ingredients and recommended by 9 out of 10 vets without saying where the evidence comes from, so read those as marketing. Also note that a larger dog needing three chews a day gets through 90 chews in a month. The rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 8,356 ratings.

If nothing here matches your dog
Some dogs need something else. A dog with a shellfish or fish problem may do better on a product without green lipped mussel, and a dog on a prescription joint diet should not have extras added without asking the vet. Very small dogs and puppies are different cases again, and a growing dog's joint issues are a veterinary matter rather than a shopping one.
Whatever you choose, give it a fair trial of about a month or two, note any change in how your dog gets up, climbs stairs and walks, and stop if you see digestive upset. If there is no change, that tells you something. Keeping your dog lean makes a bigger difference to many stiff joints than any pot or packet, and most vets will say the same.
